Skin resurfacing represents a fresh start, free from blemishes and pigmentation. Correcting skin damage through years of sun exposure resurfacing targets the skin to improve its quality and appearance. Specifically, it can improve the appearance of fine lines, remove superficial blemishes, correct many pigment problems, and provide a smoother texture to the skin.

How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?

Resurfacing strips away the outer layers of damaged skin and promotes collagen production so as the new skin heals in, a smooth, tight, more uniform blemish-free skin surface appears. In general, the deeper the resurfacing treatment, the longer the recovery, but the better the results.

There are a wide range of resurfacing methods available using various chemicals, lasers, or dermabrasion. Excellent results can be obtained using many of these methods.

What is the Best Skin Resurfacing Treatment?

The most common areas treated with resurfacing include the lower eyelids, smile lines, neck, “smoker lines” and crêpe paper changes around eyelids. Resurfacing can also be combined with other procedures like a facelift to enhance the results. Since a facelift does not address fine wrinkles in these areas, adding resurfacing will provide a better overall result.

While results are usually noticeable immediately following treatment, more drastic results can take up to two weeks to become visible. It is common for additional improvements to develop over the course of three months following the procedure.

Most regimens will call for one to six treatments but can vary depending on the individual condition you are looking to treat.

RESURFACING FAQ

Your recovery period is a vital part of your Fractional CO2 laser procedure, because it’s when your body heals itself and creates a brand new, glowing layer of skin. You can expect the recovery period to last approximately two weeks. Initially you will be swollen, but there is little pain associated with recovery.

You will experience redness and flakiness in the treatment area and a scab will form over the newly exposed skin. This should be allowed to separate on its own revealing the healed pink skin below. This usually takes about 5-10 days; the deeper the injury the longer this takes. This is completely normal, and is in fact how your body heals itself after the procedure to deliver a rejuvenated appearance. The new skin will be pink for several weeks to months until it returns to your natural skin colour. Once the skin is healed, camouflage makeup can be applied to cover the redness.

Most patients are able to return to work in 1 to 2 weeks. It is critically important to apply sunblock at all times until the redness is gone. If this is not done, blotchy irregular skin pigmentation may result.
